When trusting other people feels difficult
Finding it difficult to trust doesn't necessarily mean that you're being overly cautious.

Given what you've seen, heard - and perhaps experienced in your own relationships - it makes sense that trusting other people may sometimes feel difficult. You may find yourself questioning someone's intentions, keeping your guard up or maintaining some distance even when part of you would like to feel closer.

If trust or safety hasn't always felt reliable, your nervous system may have learnt that being cautious around other people helps protect you. Rather than automatically assuming that someone is safe, you may watch closely for signs that they could disappoint, hurt or let you down.

The difficulty comes when your guard stays up even with people who have consistently shown themselves to be trustworthy. Protecting yourself may feel safer, but it can also make it difficult to experience the closeness, support and connection that you might actually want.

Being cautious may help protect you.
Always having your guard up can make connection difficult too.

Learning to notice what someone's behaviour is showing you - and allowing trust to develop gradually when it feels safe enough - can help you feel more confident choosing who you let in and how close you allow them to become.
