When you can’t seem to switch off
You may find that you get through your day, manage what needs to be done, and keep going as best you can - but still feel like you’re not fully able to relax. Even in quiet moments or at the end of the day, your mind keeps moving and your body struggles to settle. This can feel confusing, especially when nothing obvious seems “wrong.”

Often, this happens when your nervous system has been in a state of alertness for a long time. Your body can learn to stay in “on mode,” scanning, thinking, and preparing for what might come next - even when the present moment is safe. You might notice ongoing tension, restlessness, or difficulty mentally “switching off,” no matter how much you try to rest.

Counselling can help you begin to understand these patterns with more clarity and compassion. It offers space to gently explore what keeps your system activated and to learn simple tools that support regulation. Practices such as grounding, breath awareness, and slowing down internal pressure can help your body begin to recognise moments of safety again.

Healing is not about forcing yourself to relax. It is about gradually helping your system learn that it does not need to stay in constant alertness. Over time, with support and small consistent changes, rest can begin to feel more natural, and life can start to feel less like you are always “on.”
