Understanding emotional overwhelm
Sometimes life can feel like it’s too much. You might notice that small things tip you over the edge, leaving you tearful, irritable, or on high alert. Other times, you might feel the opposite - shut down, numb, or disconnected. Experiencing these swings doesn’t mean something is “wrong” with you; it is often just your nervous system trying to protect you.

When your body senses danger - even if it’s not life-threatening - it can respond in two ways: by flooding you with emotions or by shutting you down completely. Both are ways in which your body tries to keep you safe. Understanding this can help you see that your reactions, whilst confusing, are normal and understandable.

Counselling can help you learn to notice these patterns and create space to respond differently. Simple practices, like grounding exercises or brief self-check-ins, can help calm your body and give you a sense of control when emotions swing suddenly.Over time, these small steps build resilience and emotional stability.

Healing isn’t about stopping the feelings completely. It’s about noticing them, understanding them, and giving yourself tools to manage them safely. With support, those tiny moments of practice can make a big difference, helping you feel steadier and more in control of your emotional world.
